PCWatchdog is an entirely self-funded, local watchdog platform built from scratch and maintained locally in Pawnee County, NE. We reject corporate backing and political money to bring you direct, unfiltered transparency.
Keeping local government transparent takes a massive investment of both equipment and personal time. Behind every single meeting note, audio recording, and report published here is a physical system of server hardware that requires constant electricity and regular maintenance. But the biggest cost isn't the hardware—it's the manual labor. As the sole journalist and operator here, every public meeting requires hours more of my own time to attend in person, take meticulous notes, process the audio transcriptions, and verify the facts before publishing them to the community. The effort is paying off: from June to July 2026 alone, we saw an increase of over 400 new visitors, proving our community is hungry for this information.
Because I choose not to use corporate social media like Facebook or X, I don't pay for advertising beyond a handful of hard-stock business cards, I don't see likes or comments. Instead, I look directly at our community interest: we are currently averaging 2,800+ local visitors a month. The numbers are climbing, proving that our community truly values having access to this public data.
The Local Accountability Roadmap
My immediate goal is for this platform to pay for its own basic utility costs through our local economy. As our readership grows, I plan to add a local business directory. This will let neighbors find nearby services and give our local small businesses an exclusive spot to advertise—completely free from invasive tracking networks.
But expanding this platform isn't just about code—it's about boots on the ground. Right now, my coverage is strictly limited to the Board of Equalization and the Board of Commissioners. I work as hard as I can, but with only so many hours in the day and limited resources, I can only do so much on my own.
With enough community support to offset baseline operations, it would free up the personal time required for me to expand our coverage to the City Council and other critical local governing bodies. Your backing transforms this from a limited project into a comprehensive watchdog for every corner of our local government.
I haven't built out the final software for the business directory yet, nor have I formally reached out to local business owners. Until the platform is self-sustaining, I am carrying the monthly costs entirely on my own. Because we host everything locally on our own equipment right here in Pawnee City, our community archives can never be quietly shut down or censored by corporate web-hosting companies bowing to political complaints.

No Paywalls. Protecting Public Information.
I have absolutely no desire to hide PCWatchdog behind a paid subscription or paywall like a traditional newspaper. Information crucial to the public interest must remain completely free to read. Our elderly residents on fixed incomes and young families working hard to build a life here should never face a financial barrier to see exactly how their local tax dollars are spent.
In a close community like ours, speaking out publicly or questioning authority carries a heavy personal cost. Many neighbors simply cannot risk the social friction, pressure, or professional blowback that comes with challenging local decisions. I completely understand that hesitation.
By stepping up as the sole operator here, I am willing to carry that public visibility, put my name on the line, and invest the grueling hours required to verify these records so that you don't have to compromise your social circles or livelihood.
